Ellen Rowe, jazz pianist and composer, is currently Professor and Chair of the Department of Jazz and Contemporary Improvisation at the University of Michigan. She has performed at jazz clubs and on concert series throughout the U.S., as well as touring in Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Ireland, Poland and Australia. When not leading her own trio or quintet she is in demand as a sideman, having performed with a wide variety of jazz artists including Kenny Wheeler, Tim Ries, Tom Harrell, John Clayton, Ingrid Jensen, Frank Morgan and Steve Turre. She was also a guest on two installments of Marian McPartland’s “Piano Jazz” on National Public Radio.

Ellen Rowe performs in concert with Grand Rapids Pianist, Robin Connell, on Steinway and Schimmel grand pianos.  Chris Kjorness joins them on bass.  The cost is $10.00 and $5.00 for students.

winterwest 2016

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks

The 6th annual WinterWest event is coming back to Richmond Park from January 29-31. WinterWest is an event that encourages people and families to get out and enjoy winter in our parks.

With the return of GRD’s Pond Hockey all events will be held in the park over the weekend of January 29-31.  The weekend will feature an Adult and Corporate Crazy Cardboard Sled Race on Friday January 29th, a Family Sled Building Day on January 30th, and the Kids Crazy Cardboard Sled Race on Sunday January 31st.  There will also be a warming shelter open for families and individuals throughout the weekend events.

 

Friday night will feature a new event, the Adult and Corporate Crazy Cardboard Sled Race presented by Long Road Distillers. The event is a partnership between Friends of Grand Rapids Parks and Grand Rapids Sports and Social Club. Registration is $40 and can be found on the GRSSC website. Onsite registration starts at 5pm and the first race will begin at 5:30 pm!

On Saturday, head to the Richmond Park lodge between 1 and 4 pm to build a sled for the Kids’ Crazy Cardboard Sled Race. The warming shelter will be open during event hours all weekend long where hot chocolate and coffee will be available.

One of the most popular parts of the event is the Kids’ Crazy Cardboard Sled Race sponsored by West Michigan Credit Union which will take place on Sunday, January 31 at 1:00 pm.
