The PLANET D NONET “a down & dirty little swing band from Detroit” was founded by drummer RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell. The Planet D Nonet is about swing, blues, space-age jazz and classic American songs all served with plenty of good humor with an eye toward turning people onto this kind of music.  Planet D plays swing-alicious jazz, booty-shaking big band, funk-atrocious fusion and some tribal-y tunes. And everything served Detroit-flavored.

Black Bear Combo was formed in 2002 by Doug Abram, a noise drummer inspired to take up horns after hearing Romany musicians in Ceske Krumlov. Our travels have taken us across the country, to festivals on both coasts, Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans, the Halloween party at the White House, and every nook and corner of Chicago.

They have played rock clubs, basements, festivals, weddings, funerals and parties of every description. Their sound is rooted in different styles from eastern Europe which they play in a way that’s all their own.

Saxophonist Phil Denny returns with more tasty lyricism, sultry flow and stylish grooves on the diverse and well-balanced sophomore release “Upswing,” following a stellar “Crossover” debut which garnered three Billboard charting singles. A spiraling discussion surrounding the latest release was prompted by the blazing summer single “Soak It Up” currently receiving national and international attention. Denny’s just released 11-track album infuses elements of rhythm and blues, urban vibe, uptempo pop and funk, and demonstrates a clear ability to raise the bar while displaying growth in artistry.
